Crime

“Honor killings” in Pakistan. Two pregnant women die at the hands of their families in the last few days. (Read More; Read More)

  • This is what happens in societies where human life has no worth, no value and anarchy prevail. In such societies, men often treat women as objects. And, it seems, women consider women as objects, too. How can somebody kidnap, torture and kill their daughter, execution style, in the name of “honor”? I guess that’s a rhetorical questions. Pakistan has witnessed 212 “honor killings” of women in the first five months of this year. How was it last year? 2015 saw close to 1100 women die in the hands of their relatives. Now, how does the Pakistani society view “honor” killing? According to a survey conducted by Pew Research, about 40% of the survey respondents consider “honor killings” of women are often/sometimes justified—30% think that it is often justified, 9% consider it as sometimes justified. Furthermore, the survey also found that in the case of “honor killings” of men, 33% of the survey respondents hold the view that the action is often/sometimes justified.

History

  • For a few millennias, two ancient Egyptian cities remained submerged under water until they were discovered in 1996 by a French archaeologist named Franck Goddio. According to the article, “For 1,000 years, Thonis-Heracleion was completely submerged. Fish made their homes among the rubble of mighty temples; hieroglyphs gathered algae. Gods and kings sat in stasis, powerless, their statues slowly withdrawing from the world, one inch of sand at a time. Goddio spent years surveying this find, as well as neighboring Canopus, which was rediscovered by a British RAF pilot in 1933 who noticed ruins leading into the waters.” Oceans cover 71% of the Earth’s surface and 90% of the Earth’s biosphere. I can only image what other secrets the great mass of water hiding from us.

  • Michelle: Julianna, if you get sick again, do you want to go to the hospital again or stay home?
    Julianna: Not the hospital.
Michelle: Even if that means that you will go to heaven if you stay home?
    Julianna: Yes.
Michelle: And you know that mommy and daddy won’t come with you right away? You’ll go by yourself first.
Julianna: Don’t worry. God will take care of me.
Michelle: And if you go to the hospital, it may help you get better and let you come home again and spend more time with us. I need to make sure that you understand that. Hospital may let you have more time with mommy and daddy.
    Julianna: I understand.
Michelle: (crying) — I’m sorry, Julianna. I know you don’t like it when I cry. It’s just that I will miss you so much.
Julianna: That’s OK. God will take care of me. He’s in my heart.

How Firefox is going to “suffer” from “split personalities”. (Read More)

  • According to the article, “Mozilla is debuting Firefox Containers, a new feature that separates web history within the same browser to split online “personalities” for its users. The containers not only compartmentalize web use for individuals but could alter yet again the dynamic of how users present themselves in the online world.”
