Crime

After a night of binge drinking, this woman was driving home sh**faced. At around 6:20 AM, she hit a pedestrian, probably killing him instantly. The car was moving so fast that, on impact, one of the legs got severed from man’s body, travelled through the rear window and landed on the trunk of the car. His body got lodged in the windshield of the car, as she continued driving for another .75 miles, at times over a sidewalk, before reaching her home. Next, she parked her car, got out, and very casually walked to her house. It was her husband who called the paramedics and the police. Now she is in a detention facility booked for felony driving under the influence (DUI) and vehicular manslaughter.

Can you imaging how drunk she must have been to wreak such havoc and not even stop until reaching her home? Now she will have to live with this guilt for the rest of her life. In 2014, the US saw 32,675 people die in motor vehicle accidents. Approximately, one-third of those fatalities, 9,967 deaths, were due to drunk driving. A staggering number.

In India, many people drink and drive, and think it is “cool” to do so. Yes, everything is cool until someone gets hurt or dies.

Sports

So, the minnows beat the giants, yesterday, and twitter erupted. Spoilt millionaires, who are treated like gods by their fans, and on whom they spend their hard-earned money, failed to deliver for their country. Most of these players are magnificent only at the club level, but fail miserably while playing for their country. Leo Messi, anyone? Cristiano Ronaldo, anyone?

  • Wayne Rooney earns Euro 22M per year; hence, do you think he will miss much if he doesn’t deliver for his country. His paycheck is secured for the year.
  • Joe Hart, England’s goalkeeper, earns £110,000 per week.
  • Rahim Sterling earns £180,00 per week.
  • Harry Kane earns £100,000-a-week.
  • Daniel Sturridge earns £120,000 per week.

Contrast this with players from Iceland. It seems, one of them works in a petrol station when not playing football, and another works in a farm.

Money may not be the biggest motivator after all, and, sometimes, as proven by England’s millionaire players, it can be a de-motivator.
